It will give you more insights into the distinguishing factors such as brokerage charges, trading platforms, their products and services, account opening & AMC charges and also information regarding any special offers.

My aim is to help you in comparing and analyzing brokerage firms so that you can take better decision in choosing best share brokers for you.

If you are very new to stock market, then let me explain two different types of stock brokers existing in India.

  • Fill Service Brokers: These brokers offer services not only in stocks but also in other investment options like bonds, insurance and portfolio management etc. Usually brokerage of these brokers is high because they charge in terms of percentage of total traded value. For example, Lets us take brokerage as 0.5%. If you buy shares worth of Rs 10,000 then you pay Rs50 as brokerage. If you buy for Rs 10 Lakh, the brokerage would be Rs 5000.
  • Discount Brokers: With these brokers, you pay flat (fixed) price irrespective of traded value. For example, the biggest broker of India Zerodha charges flat Rs20 for an executed order. So this will result in enormous savings. But these brokers do not provide any recommendation and tips.

So it is essential to find and choose the broker who suits us.

Parameters I used for Broker Comparison

I would like to give you some pointers and what to look for when you compare two stock brokers

  • Brokerage Charges : This plays a major role in stock brokers selection. Pick the broker whose charges are reasonable. Don’t go with Rs5/order type of broker. Their business is not not sustainable.
  • Customer Support : Never go to a broker only for lower brokerage charges. Never compromise on the customer support.
  • Exposure/Leverage/Margin : Keep away from the brokers who offer very high leverage, they face the risk of going bankrupt.
  • Trading Platform: Share Trading platform should be stable without any glitches especially if you are a day trader ( Read : Top rated trading platforms of India)
  • Mobile Apps : Nowadays nothing happens without mobile. So review features of their apps too. ( Read : Best Mobile trading apps of India)
  • Research and Tips : Getting research reports is OK but I would say never go behind tips. They seldom work on consistent basis.
  • Products & Services : Cross check if the broker support the product you are interested in. For example, discount brokers normally support IPO investment. Some doesn’t support NRI investments.
  • Offers : Not a major factor. But I included it to warn you to not to fall for them. For example, some brokers lure saying no Account Maintenance Charges (AMC). But the fine print says that it is true for only first year. Second year onwards they levy hefty charges.

Broker Comparison : Final Thoughts

Stock brokers are equal in many terms, but the differentiating factor between brokers in my opinion is their customer support and trading platforms.

Full service and discount brokers are contrast to each other in terms of brokerage. If your main aim is to save on brokerage then compare two discount stock brokers and go with the best.

But if you are looking for multiple services under single stock broker and ready to pay higher fees, full service broker may be opt for you.
